The Silent Meditation Forest Cabin is located in the peaceful Ozolini retreat near Riga, Latvia, designed to create a calm and quiet environment for meditation and reflection. It places importance on the connection between nature and living spaces, aiming to provide users with an opportunity for mindfulness while surrounded by the beauty of the forest. The design concept is focused on encouraging both inward contemplation and an appreciation of the outdoors.

Geometric Elements

The cabin features two distinct geometric forms: a cone and an inverted cone. These shapes help create different areas within the space, guiding the experience for those inside. The cone directs one’s gaze toward the forest, fostering a connection to the environment beyond its walls. In contrast, the inverted cone creates a sheltered area that blocks outside distractions, promoting focused reflection. This arrangement allows for a mix of observation and quiet personal time.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the cabin is thoughtfully laid out, with clear divisions between communal and private zones. There are specific areas for cooking, dining, and sleeping, which helps people concentrate on their tasks without interruptions. The design includes a slanted gap between spaces, encouraging conscious movement throughout the cabin. This aspect adds a layer of awareness to how individuals interact with their surroundings and each other.

Construction and Materiality

The framework of the Silent Meditation Forest Cabin relies on established construction techniques. It is primarily made of wood, featuring a waffle floor slab supported by vertical columns and transverse circular beams. The central meditation areas take the form of self-standing concrete cones, which provide both stability and unique spaces for quiet contemplation. By using locally sourced timber, the design reflects a commitment to sustainability and enables the cabin to fit naturally within its surroundings.

Connection to Nature

The setting in the Ozolini retreat significantly enhances the cabin’s appeal. The surrounding forest and rich biodiversity contribute to the overall experience of being in this space. The design encourages deep engagement with nature and promotes a sense of peace. This connection is further enhanced by a semi-open deck allowing occupants to comfortably enjoy the sights and sounds of the woods while transitioning between indoor and outdoor living.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
