The design located at the mouth of the Saka River in Courland, Latvia, offers a retreat for poets, providing a dedicated space for creative work in a peaceful environment. The overall concept revolves around the idea of the "shell," representing safety and growth. This theme fosters an atmosphere that encourages both solitude and community, essential for artistic expression.

Conceptual Framework

The shell concept infuses the design with meaning. It reflects the identity of poets as seekers of dreams, balancing their need for isolation with opportunities for connection. The architecture incorporates organic shapes that resonate with nature, allowing the structure to blend harmoniously with its surroundings.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout is divided into five distinct areas: living space, activity space, dining space, meditation space, and residential units for the owners. This arrangement promotes a clear division between private and communal functions while ensuring ease of movement throughout the retreat. The careful placement of these spaces helps maintain privacy while fostering engagement when desired.

Structural Elements

Concrete rib beams form the roof structure, providing essential support while adding a dynamic visual element to the sloping design. Pine, used for formwork, enhances the interior by adding warmth and creating a connection to natural materials. This choice also aligns with sustainable practices by reducing energy consumption, making the design mindful of its environmental impact.

Meditation Space

The meditation space is purposely simple, featuring a clean and spacious environment devoid of distractions. Its separation from the other areas allows users to engage in personal reflection without interference. This serene setting is essential for fostering a calm atmosphere, supporting the retreat's aim of enhancing creativity.

Amidst the soothing sounds of the river and the rustle of leaves, the architecture itself encourages moments of quiet thought and inspiration for those who come to this sanctuary.
