The Seed Cabins are located in the Ozolini Ancient Woodlands, near Lake Bezdibene. The design emphasizes creating spaces meant for meditation and reflection. It draws inspiration from the natural process of tea harvesting, aiming to connect people with their environment. The overall approach is about blending architecture with nature in a way that invites users to appreciate the surroundings.

Architectural Concept

The cabins are arranged in a spherical formation, taking cues from the structure of birds' nests. This layout promotes a sense of unity in the landscape while reflecting the organic forms found in nature. Each cabin is placed at a different height and position, allowing for varied perspectives and experiences. This design thoughtfully mimics the natural growth processes observed in vegetation.

Sustainability

A notable focus in the project is sustainability. The design incorporates natural elements, such as tree branches and vegetation waste gathered from the site. This choice reduces the environmental impact typically associated with construction. By using locally sourced materials, the project emphasizes a connection to the landscape and minimizes its carbon footprint.

Interior Experience

Inside the cabins, the design fosters a sense of meditative isolation. This tranquility invites occupants to engage deeply with their surroundings, enhancing the experience of solitude. The interior spaces are crafted to encourage reflection, allowing occupants to feel at one with nature.

The design elements of the Seed Cabins reflect a careful consideration of their natural context. Each aspect is designed to promote a thoughtful engagement with the environment, inviting users to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Ozolini Ancient Woodlands.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
