Meditation Spaces with Polycarbonate Twinwall Forms in Urban Tokyo

Project in-detail

The integration of polycarbonate twinwall panels and geometric forms creates a series of modular meditation spaces in urban Tokyo, providing a tranquil retreat for introspection amidst the city's vibrancy.
5 key facts about this project
01
Modular structures emphasize geometric forms to enhance spatial engagement.
02
Polycarbonate twinwall panels provide durability and natural light diffusion.
03
Located near Harajuku, integrating into a vibrant urban context.
04
Designed to foster mindfulness and personal reflection in public spaces.
05
Prefabricated construction allows for efficient assembly and minimal site disruption.

The Bicubic/Dodecahedron meditation modules in Tokyo serve as quiet spaces for reflection and mindfulness amid the busy urban scene. Located near Harajuku, at Yoyogi Olympic Stadium and Meiji Shrine, these modules are designed to offer a calm environment for introspection. The concept revolves around geometric shapes that create a modular form, allowing flexibility in use while encouraging a sense of peace.

Form and Function
-
Geometric forms, specifically bicubic and dodecahedron shapes, are used to create unique meditation spaces. These spaces are intended to provide a counterbalance to the surrounding energy of the city. Each module is designed to be functional and visually engaging, inviting users to participate in meditative practices.

Materiality
-
The modules incorporate 10mm polycarbonate twinwall panels, which are key to the structure's design. These panels effectively combine transparency and opacity. Prefabricated and joined with edge extrusions, they provide strength and durability. The arrangement of these materials allows for natural light to filter in, creating an ever-changing atmosphere that connects users with the outside world.

Spatial Experience
-
Light and shadow play an important role in each module, contributing to an enriching sensory experience. The design includes both translucent and opaque sections to ensure privacy while allowing a view of the lively surroundings. This balance of seclusion and openness caters to those looking for personal space in a crowded city.

Integration with Context
-
Set in a culturally significant area, the meditation modules have been designed to engage with their environment. Their location enhances the experience of the users, who can find respite from their busy lives. The design strikes a thoughtful balance between providing a retreat and remaining connected to the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

The unique shapes of the meditation modules foster a connection between users and their environment. Natural light washes over the interiors through the polycarbonate panels, creating a calm and inviting space for contemplation.
