The Observation Tower at Kurgi Farm draws inspiration from Latvian mythology, particularly the figure of Usins, the god associated with light and spring. Located in a rural area, the tower serves as a space for observation as well as a link between visitors, horses, and the natural landscape. The design aims to foster a connection between cultural heritage and the environment, allowing users to engage with the changing seasons of the farm.

Design Configuration

The structure consists of two parallel towers that meet at the top. This arrangement is different from the usual single-core towers, allowing for a broad view of the farmland and the adjacent forest. The open layout encourages an engaging experience with the environment, inviting people to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings in an interactive way.

Central Passage and Functionality

A central corridor is one of the key features of the tower. This passage connects the two sections and allows movement for both visitors and horses. It includes feeding and drinking stations, adding a layer of activity within the space. This function enhances the overall user experience while emphasizing the relationship between the structure and the farm’s daily operations.

Material Selection

For this design, metal is used in the primary framework, while local wood is chosen for the floors and cladding. These materials are in line with traditional building practices in the area, helping the tower blend with its rural context. The wooden cladding, arranged horizontally, reflects local architectural styles and contributes to the overall look of the design.

User Engagement and Experience

The top level provides an open area that serves as a space for observation and relaxation. A glass floor in this section allows visitors to see the landscape below from a new perspective. This design choice encourages ongoing interaction between users and the environment.

Lighting and heating systems integrated into the structure make it usable throughout the year. This feature ensures that the space remains welcoming across all seasons.

Each choice made in this design contributes to creating a meaningful relationship between the tower and its surroundings. The structure stands as an example of how architecture can connect people, horses, and the land in a cohesive manner.
