Local Stone Facade With Green Roofing in A Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

A local stone facade and a green roof that blends with the volcanic terrain create a sustainable retreat for hikers seeking comfort and refreshments.
5 key facts about this project
01
Local stone cladding enhances durability and ties the structure to its volcanic setting.
02
The green roof integrates with the natural terrain, minimizing visual impact.
03
Interior zones provide varied atmospheres for socializing and quiet reflection.
04
Strategic placement offers dynamic views of Hverfjall volcano from inside.
05
Design encourages unexpected discovery as visitors approach from hiking trails.

The Volcano Coffee Shop is located at the base of Hverfjall volcano and serves as an important stop for hikers. Its design focuses on connecting with the surrounding landscape, allowing the building to blend in with the natural environment. The overall concept prioritizes functionality and comfort for visitors while respecting the scenic beauty of the area.

Site Integration

The building features a green roof that merges with the terrain, helping it maintain a low profile. This design choice makes the café nearly invisible from afar, allowing visitors to discover it gradually as they make their way up the trail. This careful consideration not only protects the geological features of Hverfjall but also enhances the experience of those who come to enjoy the café.

Interior Atmosphere

Inside the coffee shop, there is a clear contrast between the simple exterior and the inviting warmth of the interior. The café has two main areas: one with large glazed windows that lets in plenty of light, and another darker space designed for quiet reflection. This arrangement supports various activities and creates an overall welcoming environment where visitors can relax and recharge.

Material Selection

Local stones are used for the cladding on the building’s core and façade, supporting sustainable practices. This choice ensures durability and helps the café blend in with its geographical context. By using materials that are native to the area, the design reinforces connections to the local landscape while providing a sturdy structure that can withstand the weather.

Design Detail

The rounded shapes of the building reflect the surrounding landscape and create a sense of harmony with nature. The café is carefully positioned to not only serve as a waypoint for hikers but also to offer stunning views of the volcano and its surroundings. Visitors can take a moment to appreciate the beauty of Hverfjall while enjoying food and drink in a comfortable space designed for relaxation.
