Yoga House on a Cliff is located in the tranquil area of Vale de Moses, Amieira, Portugal. It embodies the principles of Yoga and Zen while serving as a retreat for relaxation and practice. Designed to resonate with the surrounding landscape, the building connects its inhabitants deeply with nature. The overall concept aims to engage the body, mind, and spirit, ensuring spaces are functional for a range of activities while promoting a peaceful atmosphere.

Environmental Integration

The design considers the local climate and natural elements, incorporating earth, wind, fire, water, and aether as foundational ideas. The building is positioned to make the most of its views and natural light. It includes areas specifically for Yoga practice, as well as open spaces for social interaction and personal reflection. Each part of the layout encourages a sense of calm and presence, allowing individuals to connect with their surroundings.

Sustainable Design Features

Bioclimatic principles guide the architecture, focusing on passive heating and cooling to create a comfortable indoor climate. Roof skylights enhance natural light and improve ventilation throughout. The use of thermal mass helps regulate temperature, maintaining comfort regardless of the season. This thoughtful approach reflects a commitment to sustainability and the responsible use of resources.

Material Palette

Materials are selected for their practicality and visual appeal. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) offer excellent thermal insulation and sound dampening, which supports efficiency without sacrificing comfort. Local stone cladding helps ground the structure in its environment, creating a visual link to the landscape. White stucco adds a contemporary touch, while Portuguese tiles (azulejos) on the roof and vertical surfaces connect the design to local traditions.

Water Management Systems

A grey water management system runs alongside rainwater collection. These features support sustainable water use, making it possible to utilize resources effectively for shower and sink functions. By integrating these systems, the design emphasizes environmental responsibility and practical solutions for daily needs.

The outdoor spaces complete the experience, featuring panoramic decks and an infinity pool with jets. Zen gardens invite reflection and relaxation, reinforcing the connection between the building and the surrounding landscape.
