The project, located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, represents a thoughtful approach to modern living influenced by the Qiang people's culture. This high-altitude region, known for its rugged terrain and diverse ecosystems, serves as the backdrop for a design that blends traditional values with contemporary needs. The goal is to create a modular living space that meets the practical requirements of its inhabitants while respecting their historical and cultural identity.

Modular Design

The design takes a modular approach that allows for flexibility and adaptability. Each module serves a specific function, beginning with private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms that offer comfort and privacy. Adjacent to these, communal areas such as restaurants and kitchens encourage social interaction among residents. This separation of private and shared spaces reflects the importance of community in Qiang culture, facilitating connections among neighbors while providing personal sanctuary.

Sustainability Integration

Sustainability is a key focus of the design, highlighted through the incorporation of systems that support environmental responsibility. Solar panels are integrated for energy management, providing a reliable source of power in an ecologically sensitive manner. Additionally, rainwater collection systems are included to help manage water resources efficiently. These sustainable features ensure the building can operate effectively in the challenging conditions of the plateau, making use of what the environment offers.

Cultural Resonance

The architectural elements are closely linked to the cultural identity of the Qiang people, drawing inspiration from traditional Tibetan diaolou structures. Although specific materials were not discussed in the overview, it is likely that the design employs local resources suited to the climate. This connection to cultural heritage enriches the living environment, as the building not only serves its inhabitants but also honors the traditions and history of the region.

The design prioritizes harmony with the landscape, with modules arranged to follow the contours of the land. This careful placement helps to blend the structures into their surroundings, ensuring that they do not disrupt the natural beauty of the plateau. By embodying the concept of “living according to the mountain,” the architecture allows residents to experience a sense of connection to the terrain while enjoying modern amenities.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
