The Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located within a scenic vineyard, designed to create a space for people to come together and enjoy wine in a welcoming environment. The Tasting Room acts as a central area where visitors can immerse themselves in the local winery experience while celebrating the importance of family and shared moments. The design focuses on fostering a sense of community through thoughtful spatial planning that encourages interaction and connection.

Spatial Arrangement

The design employs a Reception Courtyard as the first area that visitors encounter, providing an initial space for socializing before they enter the Tasting Room. This courtyard helps to set a relaxed atmosphere where guests can mingle. Upon entering the Tasting Room, large glass walls reveal views of the vibrant vineyard outside, linking the indoor space with the landscape and allowing natural light to fill the room.

Central Tasting Table

At the center of the Tasting Room is a large, segmented tasting table, which serves as the primary spot for guests to gather. This table can accommodate different group sizes and encourages conversation among visitors. By creating both communal and intimate spaces, the design reflects the winery’s dedication to hospitality and highlights the role of shared experiences in enjoying wine.

Material Expression

The project uses specific materials that connect with the local context. The main walls are made from old Portuguese-style limestone block, a choice that resonates with traditional vineyard architecture. Inside, period-accurate wood cabinetry adds warmth and character, making the space feel inviting. These materials enhance the overall design while linking back to the historical significance of the winery.

Cultural Integration

In addition, the design features traditional Portuguese reproductions of statues, such as the Art and the Skill. These artistic elements add depth to the setting and are a nod to the region's rich cultural heritage. The statues contribute to the overall narrative of the winery, allowing visitors to appreciate the artistry involved in winemaking and the local culture.

The tasting table stands out as a key design feature, inviting guests to gather and share stories. It reinforces the central theme of community and celebration, making the Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Room a space for connection within the beautiful vineyard landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
