The Ribbon Garden serves as a hospice located in the peaceful landscape of Normandy, surrounded by green fields and limestone cliffs. The design focuses on creating a supportive environment for patients dealing with illness. Emphasizing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs, the project aims to provide a space that promotes healing and well-being.

Design Concept and Layout

The layout centers around a garden that acts as the heart of the building. Five main rooms are arranged around this garden, encouraging both community interaction and personal reflection. A ramp walkway connects these spaces, allowing easy movement for all patients, including those with limited mobility. This arrangement creates an inviting atmosphere focused on accessibility.

Functional Spaces

Various individual and communal spaces are crucial to the design. Private therapy rooms allow for concentrated treatment. In contrast, group therapy rooms promote a sense of community among patients. There is also a chapel for spiritual reflection, along with a library and activity space that provide opportunities for family involvement and social engagement.

Material and Environmental Integration

Limestone is the primary material used, aligning with the local context and enhancing the building's connection to the surroundings. This choice supports the design goal of blending with nature. The stone’s presence contributes to a calming atmosphere, reinforcing the sense of peace within the hospice.

Restorative Areas

The project includes dedicated areas for relaxation and quiet. A meditation room and bathhouse offer tranquility, allowing patients to unwind and recharge. The thoughtful placement of these spaces ensures that each element of the design considers patient comfort.

Large windows frame views of the garden and bring in natural light, enriching the environment and creating a link between the indoors and outdoors. The overall design focuses on creating a calm setting where healing can take place, reflecting the natural beauty of the environment.
