The Great Kemeri Bog Visitor Center is located in Kemeri National Park, Latvia. It serves as an entry point to a unique natural landscape filled with diverse ecosystems. The center is designed to support various functions, enhancing the visitor experience in this beautiful setting. The architecture focuses on connecting people to the bog's rich environment, guiding them seamlessly from the everyday world to the wonders of nature.

Design Concept

The central design idea promotes a strong connection between the building and its natural surroundings. It acts as a portal into the park, enabling visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape. The layout places the visitor center at the heart of a multifunctional space, which includes a camping site, children's playgrounds, and ample parking. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that visitors can easily access all these features.

Architectural Form

The building features a simple and organic shape that responds directly to the land. A notable characteristic is the angled roof that creates an opening in the café area, allowing natural light to flood the interior. This design choice enhances the sense of connection to the landscape outside, shifting visitors' perspectives as they move from the outside to the inside.

Material Selection

Wood is the primary material used in the construction, with pine beams forming the structural elements. The exterior is clad in thick aged fir planks, providing a warm and natural appearance that blends with the environment. This selection emphasizes durability and minimizes environmental impact while also being easy to care for over time.

Interior Configuration

Inside, the layout is crafted to provide comfort and utility for both visitors and staff. There are designated areas for administrative tasks, ticketing, and services, along with an open space that can adapt to various activities such as exhibitions or workshops. Practical features like shutters on the windows enhance the building's energy efficiency, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere throughout the seasons.

The café area, bathed in sunlight from the slanted roof, invites visitors to gather, enjoy refreshments, and appreciate the natural surroundings. This design aspect underscores a dedication to fostering a deep connection between the architecture and the stunning landscape of Kemeri National Park.
