The columbarium serves as a resting place for the deceased, designed to evoke a sense of reflection and remembrance. Located in a serene environment, the space emphasizes the themes of life and death. A half-elliptical pathway runs through the design, symbolizing the journey of the soul. As visitors walk along this path, they are invited to consider their connection with those who have passed away, encouraging both personal and communal contemplation.

Journey of the Soul

The design explores the relationship between humanity and nature, captured in the phrase Human = Earth + Soul. This formula reflects the understanding that every life eventually returns to the earth. The columbarium illustrates two journeys: one for the physical materials that decompose and one for the soul, which is thought to transcend into another realm. This duality encourages visitors to reflect on the nature of existence and mortality.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, urns are arranged within niches, creating a focus on the memories they hold. This thoughtful layout directs attention to the contemplative aspect of loss. Visitors can engage with their thoughts and emotions in a dedicated space, allowing for both private reflection and shared experiences of mourning. The design promotes a sense of connection, drawing individuals into a shared understanding of remembrance.

Thresholds of Experience

Glass thresholds enhance the transition between the physical and the spiritual. These clear panels allow natural light to filter into the space, serving as a reminder of hope and the divine. The interaction between light and shadow contributes to the overall ambiance. It creates an environment where visitors can find solace and engage deeply with their thoughts.

Interaction with Nature

A raised platform supports the placement of candles and flowers, allowing visitors to honor their loved ones in a tangible way. This feature introduces a sensory experience, inviting people to actively participate in the memorial process. Corten steel contrasts with the glass elements, grounding the design while also blending with the surrounding environment. This balance between materials fosters a connection to nature, enhancing the contemplative space.

The combination of thoughtful design elements creates a meaningful setting. Visitors can find a quiet moment to reflect, surrounded by the memories of those who came before them.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
