A tower constructed with steel rings and designed to harness natural light offers panoramic views from its elevated observation levels, serving as a distinctive landmark that bridges the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
5 key facts about this project
01
Light is integrated as a primary design element, shaping the interior atmosphere.
02
The tower connects two major tectonic plates, enhancing geological significance.
03
Observation levels provide 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
04
Steel rings create a unique structural form that maximizes stability.
05
A cave-like experience at Level 2 immerses visitors in the site's geology.

"From the Cave to the Sky" is located at the intersection of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, presenting a design that connects visitors with its unique geological setting. The tower serves a dual purpose, acting as both a landmark and a space for observation. Its overall concept integrates light and space, emphasizing how these elements interact to enhance the user experience.

Design Concept

The design centers on using light to shape the spaces within the tower. Instead of just being a building, it acts as a conduit for light that penetrates the interior. This feature creates varying atmospheres that encourage interaction with both the space and the surrounding environment. The careful placement of openings allows natural light to play a crucial role in the overall experience, enhancing the connection to nature.

Structural Elements

The structure consists of steel rings that vary in diameter from 3 to 4.5 meters. These rings, combined with vertical columns, provide strength while allowing flexibility. Ramps are integrated throughout the design, guiding visitors as they move between different levels. The arrangement of these ramps promotes engagement with the architecture and offers numerous vantage points from which to view the landscape.

Interior and Exterior Interaction

The interior is divided into distinct levels, each with a clear purpose. Level 0 serves as the entrance, providing access from two sides that symbolize the joining of the tectonic plates. Moving up to Level 2, visitors experience a cave-like atmosphere that connects them to the geological context. Level 6 features a balcony for viewing the surroundings and allows a break from the journey. Level 10 is a snack area, inviting visitors to pause and take in their surroundings. Finally, Level 12 opens completely to the sky, offering expansive views that highlight the natural setting.

Materiality and Expression

Materials were specifically chosen to enhance both function and aesthetics. The primary structural component is steel, which offers necessary support while contributing to a clean visual profile. Wood elements are used in the slab construction, adding warmth to the interior. A steel mesh enclosure wraps around the exterior, allowing light and air to flow in. This design choice creates a connection between the inside and outside, inviting natural elements into the structure.

Through the thoughtful combination of light, structure, and material, the tower establishes a connection to its environment. Each design element contributes to a harmonious experience, allowing visitors to engage meaningfully with both the architecture and the landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
