Strategically located at Shibuya Station, providing easy access for commuters seeking refuge.

Hidden Buranko is located in Shibuya, Tokyo, and serves as a space for meditation and reflection. It addresses the overwhelming aspects of city life, providing visitors with a moment of calm amid the fast-paced environment. The design combines playful elements with practical functionality, allowing individuals to escape the stress of everyday urban living.

Design Concept

At the core of Hidden Buranko is the reinterpretation of swings, a familiar childhood element that evokes feelings of joy and nostalgia. This design encourages users to engage with their surroundings in a refreshing way. The swings offer a chance to reconnect with personal memories, serving as a tool for relaxation and emotional grounding. In a public space, this interaction can foster a sense of community and shared experience.

Light Chimney

A defining feature of the design is the light chimney, which plays an important role in enhancing concentration and focus. The chimney draws in natural light, helping users leave behind the noise of city life as they immerse themselves in a tranquil atmosphere. By promoting reflection and mindfulness, the light chimney aligns with the aim of encouraging users to experience the present moment fully.

Seasonal Adaptability

The design also takes into account seasonal changes, allowing for adjustments according to the climate. In winter, the chimney can be lowered to keep the interior warm. In summer, raising it allows for cooling airflow, creating a comfortable environment. This flexibility enhances user experience, ensuring that the space remains relevant and inviting throughout the year.

Materiality

Hidden Buranko is constructed using a light steel frame and cement board. The steel frame provides the necessary strength while enabling easy assembly and disassembly. This makes relocation straightforward, should it be needed. The cement board contributes to soundproofing, helping block external noise and distractions. This consideration makes the meditation space more serene and focused.

Positioned in Shibuya Station, Hidden Buranko becomes a part of commuters' daily routines. It offers a retreat from the pressures of urban life. The playful design invites individuals to pause, reflect, and find some peace in their busy day. Each element works together to create a thoughtful space where connection with oneself can flourish in the heart of a bustling city.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
