Mezzo is located at the base of the Hverfjall volcano in the Mývatn region of Iceland and functions as a gathering space for local and international visitors. The design concept focuses on blending the building with its natural environment. This connection encourages a strong relationship between the structure and the landscape, providing a unique experience for those who enter.

Design Concept and Materiality

The project contrasts the dark tones of the surrounding landscape with a light brick façade. This choice enhances the building’s presence in the area while creating a visual connection to the Icelandic terrain. The light brick material not only serves aesthetic purposes but also offers durability, allowing the structure to withstand the challenging local climate.

Spatial Configuration

Curved brick walls define the entrance to Mezzo, welcoming visitors into a spacious hall. This design choice creates an open environment that makes people feel at ease from the moment they arrive. The layout connects the exhibition room and café area, encouraging interaction among visitors. This careful planning enhances accessibility, making it easy for everyone to navigate the space.

Structural Considerations

The design emphasizes structural strength through the robust brick façade, which protects the building from the region's variable weather. This choice reflects a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that the building remains functional and resilient. Window openings in the brick walls give views of the Hverfjall volcano, allowing natural light to fill the interior while framing the stunning outdoors.

Design Details

Natural light plays an important role in the experience inside Mezzo. The focus on visibility brings the outside in, encouraging visitors to engage with the beauty of the Mývatn region. The careful arrangement of spaces and the attention to detail create an environment that feels both inviting and connected to its stunning surroundings.
