The Arcs is situated in the volcanic Myvatn region of Iceland and serves as a place for farm-to-table dining. It is part of the Vogafjós resort, which is known for its cow farm that allows guests to engage directly with local food sources. The design promotes ecological sustainability while reflecting local traditions and agricultural practices.

Architectural Concept

The design draws a strong connection to the landscape through its arched form. The building faces south, capturing views of the Myvatn springs and unique geological features in the area. This orientation enhances the experience for visitors and encourages interaction between the structure and its natural surroundings.

Spatial Layout

The layout includes a three-level dining area that maximizes views, creating an immersive environment. Guests can appreciate the landscape from multiple perspectives, fostering both accessibility and exploration. By incorporating greenhouses at the entrance, the design invites visitors to engage with the agricultural aspect, reinforcing the importance of understanding food sources.

Materiality

Materials were chosen to support the project’s focus on sustainability. An Icelandic lichen turf roof alongside concrete slabs contributes to energy efficiency and connects the building to local construction traditions. Vertical weathered birch siding complements the exterior, strengthening the link to its environment. Inside, stained birch elements bring warmth, while polished Icelandic slate flooring creates harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Design Features

The Aurora Bar is designed to create intimate social spaces and offers views of the aurora borealis during winter evenings. Its placement within the building enhances the dining experience and highlights the beauty of the natural surroundings. The thoughtful furnishings and ambiance reflect principles of Nordic design and contribute to a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with visitors.
