The Iceland Black Lava Fields Visitor Center is a well-designed facility located near a significant volcano, created to enhance the experience of visitors exploring Iceland's unique geological landscape. The overall design connects closely with the volcanic environment, emphasizing a relationship with the terrain while accommodating various functional spaces for education and recreation.

Layout and Functionality

The visitor center includes a clear layout that consists of several important areas, such as a kitchen, terrace, café, exhibition area, information center, playground, lobby, and office space. This organization allows for easy movement throughout the center, with each area serving a specific purpose. The thoughtful arrangement enables visitors to engage fully with the space, aligning their experience with the center's educational goals about the local geology.

Architectural Concept

The design is closely linked to the volcanic landscape that surrounds it, reflecting the features of this natural environment through its overall form and organization. The symmetrical layout helps visitors navigate the space effectively, encouraging exploration and interaction. Different areas invite guests to connect with both the physical structure and the unique characteristics of the region.

Materials

In constructing the visitor center, a specific set of materials reflects the geological context of the site. Local black lava stone, grey cement, fiberglass, and precast lava brick were chosen to create a harmonious connection with the landscape. The black lava stone provides an authentic texture that aligns with the volcanic formations, while the grey cement offers necessary structural support. The use of fiberglass and precast lava brick adds visual interest, contributing to an overall design that is in tune with its environment.

Design Details

Attention to detail is present in various architectural features that link the center to the landscape. Large windows frame views of the surrounding volcano, allowing natural light to fill the interior while bringing the outdoor scenery inside. Outdoor terraces provide areas for relaxation, inviting visitors to take in the remarkable beauty of Iceland's lava fields. Each aspect of the design enhances the visitor experience, encouraging an appreciation of the site's unique geological features.
