The architectural project under review is situated near the volcanic terrains of Hverfjall and Myvatn Lake in Iceland. It harmoniously integrates with the rugged landscape while serving as a functional space for artistic expression and community engagement. The design seeks to establish a dialogue between the building and its natural surroundings through the careful selection of materials and innovative architectural strategies.

The primary function of this project is to house artistic exhibitions, studios for artists, and communal gathering spaces. This multifunctionality allows for the exploration and promotion of local culture, art, and environmental education, making it a significant addition to the region. The layout includes differentiated public areas, private studios, and exhibition zones, enabling visitors to experience art in an immersive environment.

The design employs a range of materials emblematic of the volcanic context of the site. Lava stone bricks and concrete create a tactile richness while ensuring structural integrity. Wooden elements contribute warmth and comfort to interior spaces, counteracting the cooler tones of stone. Glass components are strategically placed to optimize natural light and foster a connection with the outside environment, enhancing the visitor experience.

What distinguishes this project from other architectural endeavors is its deep-rooted connection to the local geography. By utilizing materials directly sourced from the vicinity, the design reinforces a sense of place and belonging. The building's form mimics the natural landscape, alongside geometric patterns reminiscent of volcanic formations, creating visual continuity between the architecture and its setting. This adherence to context ensures that the architecture is not only functional but also an intrinsic part of the natural ecosystem.

Another noteworthy aspect is the layout's emphasis on interactivity. Spaces are designed to encourage movement and exploration. Outdoor areas blend seamlessly with indoor facilities, inviting visitors to engage with nature while enjoying artistic displays. This interplay between built and natural environments fosters a dynamic experience, making the project more than just a static institution—it is an active participant in the cultural and environmental narrative of the region.

For those interested in a deeper understanding of this architectural project, it is advisable to explore the architectural plans and sections. An examination of the architectural designs will provide further insights into the creative methodologies employed in this endeavor, showcasing the innovative architectural ideas that drive its distinct identity.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
