5 key facts about this project
The Black Lava Fields Visitors Center is a thoughtfully designed space set against the backdrop of a dramatic volcanic landscape. Its primary role is to help visitors orient themselves before exploring the surrounding area. The concept focuses on creating a moment of reflection, allowing people to pause and gather their thoughts as they prepare to engage with the natural environment.
Geometric Form and Orientation
The building’s design is influenced by the site's Cardinal Directions, which leads to a clear and simple geometric shape. It features four triangular wings, each pointing towards a specific direction. This arrangement not only results in an interesting exterior but also directs attention to key views of the landscape. Visitors are invited to connect with the environment as they move through the different areas of the center.
Entrance and Transition
As visitors approach, they pass under a gabion wall canopy that connects the building with its surroundings. This feature allows soft light to filter through, creating an inviting entrance. The combination of the textural gabion wall and the precise angles of the wings creates a contrasting yet harmonious entrance experience. It encourages guests to step inside and begin their journey.
Interior Spatial Configuration
Inside, a glass torus serves as the core element that organizes the various spaces. This design choice permits ample natural light to flood the interior, drawing visitors’ attention to different areas. Each space is well-defined while still benefiting from the light and views outside. The result is an environment that promotes interaction among visitors while also providing access to important information.
Materiality and Connection
The choice of materials adds depth to the building's character, with lava stone prominently used on the façade. This choice connects the center to the geological features of the area. The use of gabion walls complements the natural landscape, ensuring that the design feels aligned with the rugged terrain of the Black Lava Fields.
Large openings within the design invite visitors to enjoy the views of the landscape. As they look outside, they can appreciate the relationship between the building and its surroundings, enhancing their overall experience of both the structure and the natural environment.
