Lattice-Shell Structure Integrating Concrete and Nature for Mindful Retreats

Project in-detail

A hemispherical lattice-shell structure hovers above minimalist concrete forms in the Vale de Moses, creating a retreat that fosters mindfulness and connection to nature through its spacious design and efficient use of rainwater.
5 key facts about this project
01
The spherical dome design allows for 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
02
Minimalist concrete structures provide stability while minimizing environmental impact.
03
A rainwater collection system integrates seamlessly with the overall design for sustainability.
04
Trapezoidal forms incorporate zoning for yoga equipment storage within the structure.
05
Multiple entry points encourage exploration of various levels and spaces throughout the retreat.

The Yoga Dome is located in the mountainous area of Vale de Moses and is designed as a retreat focused on mindfulness and connection to nature. The architecture comprises three main elements: a prominent sphere, minimalist concrete structures, and the spaces that exist between them. This arrangement creates a building that blends with its surroundings while providing areas for yoga and meditation.

Architecture Concept
The central feature is the spherical dome, crafted with a lattice-shell design that gives it the appearance of floating above the ground. This form serves both as a visual landmark and as a functional space for practicing yoga. Inside, the dome offers sweeping views of the landscape, encouraging users to immerse themselves in the environment and enhancing their experience during sessions.

Materials and Aesthetic
The supporting concrete structures are minimalist in style, offering a modern interpretation of historical architecture, reminiscent of Portuguese ruins. Concrete is chosen for its durability and rough texture, which reinforces the natural feel of the retreat. The contrast between the solid feel of these forms and the lightness of the dome creates a thoughtful relationship between the elements, reflecting the site’s character.

Spatial Dynamics
Multiple entry points allow visitors to approach the retreat from different elevations, adding variety to the experience. A staircase near the eastern elevation guides users upward, inviting them to explore. This design blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting an interaction with the natural surroundings. It enhances the feeling of peace and encourages contemplation.

Sustainability Features
Sustainable design aspects are evident in the retreat’s features, including rainwater collection systems that provide water for toilets and showers. An undercroft garden captures rainwater, further supporting environmental responsibility. These elements enhance the retreat’s ecological awareness while helping to maintain a quiet and reflective atmosphere.

Inside, the yoga studio offers ample room for participants, framed by large glass panels that connect the interior with the exterior landscape. Natural light enters the space, highlighting the tranquil environment and creating a calming atmosphere ideal for practice.
