The Roly-Floaty project integrates architecture within a forest setting, focusing on creating an open-air space. The goal is to provide experiences that connect visitors with land, water, forest, and sky. Designed to promote tranquility, the project aims to encourage meditation and reflection while engaging individuals with the surrounding natural environment. Inspired by basic geometric forms, the design features varied spherical shapes that work naturally with the landscape, fostering a clear relationship between the structures and nature.

Form Exploration

The design takes inspiration from the sphere, manipulating its shape into elongated forms. This approach results in a visually engaging structure that improves the use of space. Four separate Roly-Floaties are positioned in a clearing, creating a multifunctional area that allows for both privacy and community interaction. This arrangement accommodates different experiences, ensuring all visitors feel welcome in a shared environment.

Spatial Arrangement

To access the Roly-Floaty, visitors follow a stone-paved path that curves along the existing landscape. The pathway reflects the organic shapes of the forest, allowing for a smooth transition from the outside to the inside of the space. Upon entering, guests are greeted with views that highlight the beauty of the surroundings and reveal hidden areas of the forest, inviting exploration and discovery.

Interior Experience

The interiors of the Roly-Floaty are designed for meditation, fostering quiet reflection. A key focus is on achieving balance, encouraging individuals to be aware of their bodies and their surroundings. This element reinforces the intention behind the design, providing a place for calmness and retreat in the midst of nature.

Material Integration

In terms of materials, the project uses local larch tree panels, allowing the build to connect visually and physically with its environment. Additionally, bent sticks highlight the relationship between construction and the natural world. The focus on these materials emphasizes harmony with nature and reduces environmental impact.

Light and shadow play a significant role within the Roly-Floaty, changing throughout the day and enhancing the overall experience. This interplay encourages visitors to engage with the environment on a deeper level, creating a connection to the forest beyond the physical structures.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
