Larch Facades and Green Roofs Blending Visitor Spaces with Icelandic Landscapes

Project in-detail

The polished stainless steel façade and weathered larch materials form a striking contrast with the surrounding Icelandic landscape, while the design focuses on enhancing visitor experience through strategically placed observation points and educational spaces.
5 key facts about this project
01
Larch wood is used for both the exterior and interior, creating a natural aesthetic.
02
The observation tower offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.
03
Green roofs incorporate local vegetation, enhancing ecological integration.
04
Walkways guide visitors to geological points of interest while protecting the terrain.
05
Large glass fronts optimize natural light and connect indoor spaces with the outdoors.

The project is situated in northern Iceland, where the terrain is marked by rugged landscapes and sparse vegetation. It emphasizes a thoughtful integration with the surrounding environment. The design includes four main buildings and an observation tower, aimed at enhancing the experience of visitors while respecting the natural setting. Each component serves a specific purpose, contributing to the overall function of the site.

Design Layout

The layout carefully responds to the contours of the land. Each building is positioned to create a cohesive appearance while fulfilling different functions. The structures house a café, storage spaces, offices, and restroom facilities. The pitched roofs align with the natural slope of the terrain, allowing the buildings to blend into the landscape.

Interaction with Nature

Visitor engagement with the landscape is a priority. The design incorporates a network of walkways that guide tourists to important geological points, such as the North American Plate. Informational panels along the paths provide context about the area’s geological features. This pathway system promotes exploration while ensuring that the fragile ecosystem is protected.

Material Composition

Materials have been selected based on their durability and aesthetic qualities. Weathered larch is used throughout as an exterior material, offering both strength and a natural look that complements the environment. Solid wood forms the interiors, adding warmth and comfort. The façade features polished stainless steel, which reflects the surroundings and creates visual continuity. A green roof, made from gravel, stones, moss, and grass, enhances ecological benefits while further connecting the structures to the site.

Design Features

The observation tower stands out as a key feature, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Its strategic placement ensures optimal visibility of significant geological formations. Inside the buildings, large glass façades and skylights maximize natural light, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. This design choice allows visitors to experience the beauty of the landscape from within.

Together, these elements create a functional space that respects the natural environment while providing educational and recreational opportunities for visitors. The design encourages a deep engagement with the unique characteristics of the Icelandic landscape.
