Lapacho Walkway Elevating Views in a Sustainable Natural Setting

Project in-detail

5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed entirely from Lapacho wood for durability and low maintenance.
02
Features a gradual ramp with a maximum slope of 5% for universal accessibility.
03
Integrates an open-enclosure system for enhanced natural ventilation.
04
Designed to provide panoramic views while blending into the natural landscape.
05
Utilizes a modular approach for adaptability to different terrains and lengths.

The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower is located in a natural setting that combines landscape with purposeful design. It serves as both a pathway and an observation platform, encouraging visitors to connect with the local ecosystem. The design focuses on accessibility and education, promoting eco-tourism while offering a space for quiet reflection on the environment.

Modular Design Approach

The design incorporates a modular approach, allowing adaptability to different lengths and terrains. This system ensures that paths and towers blend together, creating an easy ascent for all, including those with disabilities. A gentle slope of 5% is maintained to provide a welcoming experience for everyone. Visitors can navigate the structure naturally, engaging with their surroundings as they move along.

Material Considerations

Ipé Tabebuia guayacan, known as Lapacho, is used as the primary material. This type of wood is strong and requires little maintenance, making it suitable for outdoor use. The choice reflects a focus on sustainability while enhancing the relationship between the design and the environment. Durable materials are essential for ensuring that the structure will last while respecting ecological values.

Sustainability Features

Various sustainability measures are integrated into the design. Two roofs are included at the transition point between the path and the tower. These roofs offer shade and help maintain comfortable temperatures. Additionally, an open-enclosure system is utilized for natural ventilation, reducing the reliance on artificial cooling. Such features support a more environmentally responsible approach to building, enhancing the visitor experience in a thoughtful manner.

The gradual transition from the path to the tower invites exploration and provides diverse viewpoints of the landscape. This flow encourages visitors to take their time and enjoy moments of connection with nature, making their journey both educational and reflective.
