5 key facts about this project
01
Laminated wood beams form the structural backbone, promoting quick assembly.
02
Integrated rainwater planters provide natural filtration and water management.
03
Triple-glazed windows enhance thermal efficiency and natural light.
04
Sliding furniture solutions optimize space usage in a compact layout.
05
Designed for both off-grid and on-grid energy efficiency.

The design is a compact urban dwelling located in the backyards of traditional duplexes and triplexes in Montreal. It covers a total surface area of 21.55 m² and aims to meet the growing demand for housing in dense urban areas. The overall concept focuses on modular architecture, which balances practical living spaces with a commitment to sustainability. The result is a residence that combines minimalism with thoughtful functionality, serving the needs of modern city dwellers.

Design Concept

The residence centers on a single engineered component made up of laminated wood beams. These beams are connected using custom-designed steel junctions, which facilitates quick assembly. This approach allows for flexibility in how the space can be used, catering to various lifestyles while ensuring that the structure integrates well with its surroundings.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a key element of the design. The structure operates partly off-grid, utilizing solar panels to generate electricity that is stored in a central home battery. This setup helps manage energy usage effectively, leading to lower utility costs. Additionally, galvanized planters are used to collect and filter rainwater naturally, enhancing resource management while also providing thermal insulation.

Interior Layout

Inside, the layout makes the most of the available space. There are separate areas designated for sleeping, cooking, and socializing. The design incorporates integrated storage solutions, such as sliding tables and beds, to optimize the limited footprint. Natural light plays an essential role, with triple-glazed windows positioned to promote cross-ventilation and improve comfort throughout the living spaces.

Sustainable Features

Sustainability is evident in various aspects of the design. Northern exposure windows allow for improved airflow, helping to keep the indoor environment fresh. Southern exposure benefits areas like the kitchen and living room by bringing in ample natural light. This careful planning emphasizes a connection to the outdoors and creates a pleasant atmosphere inside the home.

The interior reflects a modern approach to urban living, where every detail is thoughtfully curated to enhance everyday life. Each space serves a specific purpose, contributing to both comfort and efficiency, while maintaining a strong connection to its urban setting.
