The Yoga House on a Cliff is located in Vale de Moses, a peaceful area that encourages mindfulness and reflection. Designed specifically for yoga practitioners, the structure emphasizes a connection to nature and a commitment to sustainability. Its design aims to create a calm atmosphere, with spaces that foster introspection and wellness. This facility combines simplicity and functionality in a way that resonates with its natural surroundings.

Orientation and Daylight

The building is oriented predominantly towards the south, allowing natural light to fill the interior. This thoughtful design reduces the need for electric lighting and creates a warm, inviting space. Large windows bring sunlight indoors, enhancing the mood and making the environment more pleasant for yoga and meditation activities. The daylighting strategy thoughtfully integrates with the building’s purpose, promoting a sense of openness.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a core principle of the design. Solar roof tiles harness renewable energy, supporting the building's energy needs. Awning windows provide opportunities for natural ventilation, contributing to comfortable indoor temperatures without relying heavily on mechanical cooling systems. Additionally, the rainwater harvesting system not only conserves water but also supplies necessary resources for irrigation and bathroom use, reinforcing the project's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Connection with Landscape

The structure respects the natural topography of its site. It meets the ground at its openings, which minimizes disruption to the landscape during construction. Garden paths meander throughout the property, inviting users to walk and reflect as they engage with their surroundings. This connection with nature is integral to the experience, allowing for moments of calm and contemplation amidst the beauty of the environment.

Materials Selection

Materials were chosen for their relationship to the local context. The project features solar roof tiles, Portuguese granite, and Kebony wood. These materials not only serve functional purposes but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building. The selection process emphasizes using local resources, which helps the building feel like a natural part of its environment.

The yoga studio includes a spacious deck that extends outward, providing expansive views of the surrounding area. This space blends the indoor and outdoor environments, inviting users to enjoy fresh air and a sense of tranquility as they practice.
