Upended is located in the Myvatn region of Iceland, close to the Hverfjall volcano. The design presents an inverted interpretation of the familiar volcanic shape, establishing a relationship between the building and its natural landscape. It serves as a destination for reflection and exploration while staying connected to the geological context of the area.

Architectural Concept

The design embodies a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. By flipping the traditional silhouette of Hverfjall, the building acts as an extension of the volcano itself. The off-center oculus invites the viewer's gaze outward. This feature creates a bond between the inside of the building and the outside world, allowing daylight to flow into the interiors.

Materiality

The structure uses metal panels and concrete for its exterior. These materials offer a sturdy presence, elevating the building above its surroundings. They provide durability against the local weather, while also reflecting the characteristics of the volcanic terrain. The interior space contrasts with the exterior, featuring warm lighting and wood elements. This combination fosters an inviting atmosphere, making it feel comforting and secure.

Pathway Design

The pathways in Upended encourage visitors to explore, inspired by the meditative trails found in the Hverfjall landscape. These routes connect the various spaces within the building and lead out to the surrounding scenery. The walkways on the roof add a playful element to the design, offering opportunities for new views and experiences as people move through the space.

Final Design Detail

The oculus acts as a central element within the building, framing views of the volcanic landscape. It creates a moment of pause for visitors, allowing them to appreciate the beauty outside before continuing their journey within. This detail highlights the connection between the architecture and the natural environment, making it an integral part of the experience.
