The architectural design project represents a contemporary residential structure that effectively embodies the principles of sustainability and cultural context. Situated in a region of the UAE, the design aims to create a living space conducive to modern life while respecting traditional aesthetics. The building serves multiple functions: it accommodates family living, workspace, and promotes indoor-outdoor connectivity, creating a holistic living environment.

Key components of the project include a strategically organized three-level layout. The ground floor features an open-plan design encompassing the living room, dining area, kitchen, and a home office. Generous window placements facilitate natural light and ventilation, while outdoor spaces are integrated to enhance livability.

The first floor consists of several en-suite bedrooms meticulously designed to ensure privacy and comfort. The spaces are enhanced by a family room that serves as a gathering area. The second floor accommodates additional living space or personal utility, underscoring flexibility in design.

The architectural approach is characterized by several unique design elements. Notably, the integration of a vegetable garden is distinctive; it promotes sustainability and encourages interaction with nature. This aligns with modern trends in eco-friendly architecture, emphasizing self-sufficiency in urban environments.

The choice of materials plays a crucial role in the project’s identity. The use of concrete ensures structural stability, while high-efficiency glass windows optimize natural light and thermal comfort. Sustainable woods adorn certain finishing elements, adding warmth to the interiors. Innovative insulation materials are employed to achieve energy efficiency, and solar panels are seamlessly incorporated into the roof design, enhancing the project’s ecological performance.

The landscape design complements the built environment, featuring a sit-out area that bridges the indoor and outdoor spaces. This connection promotes leisure activities and a unified living experience, further enhancing the qualities of the architecture.

With its commitment to merging modern functionality with cultural heritage, the project stands as a notable example of thoughtful residential design. For an in-depth understanding of the architectural plans, sections, and detailed designs, interested readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation for comprehensive insights into its architectural ideas.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
