5 key facts about this project
01
An inclined window design frames direct views of Hverfjall Volcano from inside.
02
The exterior is clad in larch wood that ages to blend with the natural surroundings.
03
Polished concrete flooring enhances thermal insulation while reflecting natural light.
04

05
Natural light is introduced through strategically placed small windows in private areas.

Eldís Coffee Shop is located near Hverfjall Volcano in Iceland, a place defined by its natural contrasts of fire and ice. The design aims to create a welcoming space for visitors while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The concept balances warmth and coolness, as well as openness and enclosure, enhancing the experience of being in such a remarkable environment.

Design Concept
The structure uses a rectangular layout that organizes its internal spaces efficiently. This design approach supports a "road stop" feel, making it an inviting place for travelers. The building features a compact side that resembles a cozy cave, contrasting with an expansive side that has a tall, inclined window. This window allows visitors to enjoy views of the impressive Hverfjall Volcano right from inside.

Materials
Material choices are carefully made to fit the local context. The exterior of the building is clad in larch wood panels, which will naturally age to blend into the landscape over time. This choice reflects a commitment to sustainability and durability, as the materials are designed to withstand Iceland's weather conditions.

Interior Organization
The interior includes polished concrete flooring, which serves two functions: it provides insulation against the cold and reflects light to brighten the space. Drywall panels are used for the walls, helping to retain heat and facilitate a cost-effective construction process. The layout guides visitors through essential areas, including the coffee shop and the exhibition hall, while a small window in the northern wall brings in natural light, enhancing the comfort of private spaces.

Design Detail
The tall, inclined window is a key feature that frames captivating views of the Hverfjall Volcano. This design not only creates a welcoming atmosphere but also invites visitors to appreciate the unique beauty of the surrounding landscape. It is a thoughtful detail that encourages people to engage with nature as they enjoy their time at the coffee shop.
