"Meet Me on the Path of Light" is located in Latvia, a country with rich traditions centered around the worship of the sun. The ossuary serves as a memorial space for the living while honoring those who have passed away. The overall design concept emphasizes the significance of light, embodying the themes of sunrise and sunset to create pathways that guide visitors through their experiences of loss and memory.

Spatial Organization

The ossuary features a layout designed with illuminated pathways that symbolize the journey between life and death. As visitors move along these paths, they transition from the bright entrance to the more subdued interior. The pathways converge at key points, representing the connection between the living and the deceased. This organization encourages contemplation and personal reflection, allowing visitors to engage meaningfully with the space.

Material Application

Latvian wood is used for the shelves that hold the urns, linking the design to local craftsmanship and tradition. Concrete features in the entrance walls, providing stability and a clean aesthetic. These walls are inscribed with the names of the deceased, creating an intimate connection between the space and those who are remembered. This choice of materials reinforces the cultural significance of the ossuary while maintaining a respectful atmosphere.

Atmospheric Qualities

Light plays a vital role in shaping the experience within the ossuary. As dusk falls, light emanates from the structure, creating a warm and inviting glow. This illumination enhances the architectural features while fostering a peaceful ambiance. The lower height of the ossuary compared to the surrounding trees allows it to blend harmoniously with the natural environment, creating a sense of unity with the forest.

Design Detail

Inside, the gentle slope toward the niches for urns promotes a posture of respect and reflection among visitors. This thoughtful design choice invites individuals to engage with their memories of the departed. The experience becomes more than a visit; it transforms into a moment of gratitude, ensuring that each engagement is meaningful and personal.
