The Wine Hotel Tilvinum is located in Tuscany and serves as a refined wine resort that reflects the rich local culture. The design features a variety of amenities, creating a setting that promotes both community and personal relaxation. By clearly defining public and private spaces, the layout invites guests to engage with one another while also providing opportunities for solitude. The overall concept emphasizes a balance between the building and its environment, encouraging a peaceful experience.

Public Areas

The main building contains the public facilities, designed to be accessible for all guests. This area includes a pool surrounded by sun loungers, a fireplace, a wine cellar, a wine tasting room, a spa, and an outdoor pool. Such spaces encourage social gatherings and elevate the hotel's focus on wine culture. Open areas allow for a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for guests to connect with each other.

Private Residences

Private residences are strategically arranged around the main building, offering seclusion and comfort. This layout allows guests to retreat to their individual spaces while still maintaining proximity to the shared amenities. The arrangement emphasizes the idea of privacy within a larger community, encouraging guests to participate in shared experiences like wine tastings, without giving up their own personal time.

Materiality and Aesthetics

The choice of materials is important to the character of the building and respects the natural setting. The facade mainly uses white plaster, complemented by natural stone elements that add texture and visual interest. Inside, the lobby features a dark solid stone counter that contrasts with light wood flooring, creating an elegant and warm atmosphere. These material choices define the building's appearance while also linking it to the surrounding landscape, creating a cohesive feel for visitors.

Spatial Relationships

The layout of the Wine Hotel Tilvinum thoughtfully navigates the balance between communal spaces and private areas. The spacious lobby serves as both an entrance and a transition space, facilitating guest interactions while maintaining an open environment. Enjoyable amenities, such as the spa with saunas and whirlpools, offer a peaceful retreat from the more active areas of the hotel. Design details, like illuminated pathways and well-planned landscaping around outdoor spaces, enhance the overall experience, making it inviting without being overwhelming.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
