5 key facts about this project
The Iceland Cave Tower enhances the connection between the built environment and the unique geological features of Iceland, specifically overlooking the Grjótagjá caves. The structure serves multiple purposes, providing spaces for a bar, storage, a hall, and restrooms. The design concept draws on the imagery of an iceberg, highlighting both visible and hidden dimensions of the landscape, with the tower’s tall form rising above while symbolically protecting the depths below.
Design Concept
This design integrates closely with the landscape. The shape of the tower and the arrangement of its spaces are influenced by the surrounding topography. The iceberg metaphor not only captures the essence of Iceland’s environment but also encourages a dialogue between the structure and the natural site, strengthening the link between nature and human activity.
Functional Layout
The ground floor features several areas: a bar covering 30 square meters, a 14 square meter storage space, a 28 square meter hall, and a restroom of 15 square meters. The layout is carefully planned to maximize visitor engagement and enhance interaction with the landscape. By providing clear views of the caves, the design enriches the visitor experience and fosters appreciation for the site’s natural beauty.
Materiality and Aesthetics
The project uses a ventilated glass facade and metal mesh flooring, which allow natural light to fill the space while ensuring adequate structural support. The glass facade emphasizes the views of the landscape, while also improving energy efficiency. The metal mesh flooring complements the overall design and helps to anchor the tower within its environment.
Structural Integration
The first floor features a west facade that aligns with the contours of the landscape, ensuring a cohesive connection between the tower and its surroundings. This design choice allows the tower to have a subdued presence while still serving as an observation point for visitors. By carefully integrating architectural elements with the natural features of the site, the design deepens guests' understanding of the geological context.
The Iceland Cave Tower balances practical function and thoughtful design. Through its arrangement of spaces and choice of materials, it enhances the experience of the surrounding natural environment while emphasizing a clear architectural narrative.
