Hyperbolic Roof Form Enhancing Connection With Nature Through Kaikawaka Cedar and Woven Grass

Project in-detail

The hyperbolic roof form of the cabin serves to create a visually engaging connection to the surrounding landscape while utilizing kaikawaka cedar and woven grass to support its function as a dedicated space for meditation and reflection.
5 key facts about this project
01
The roof design resembles a hyperbolic paraboloid, enhancing both aesthetic and spatial qualities.
02
Kaikawaka cedar is used for the exterior cladding, allowing for natural aging in harmony with the environment.
03
Woven grass mats provide designated meditation areas while promoting a connection to nature.
04
A rainwater collection system is integrated into the roof design for sustainability purposes.
05
A wood altar positioned to the east captures direct sunlight, fostering a spiritual ambiance during meditation.

The Quarter House at Earth Energies Sanctuary functions as a retreat for contemplation and meditation, located in the peaceful countryside of New Zealand. The design highlights a strong connection with the surrounding landscape. A simple-span structure is complemented by a hyperbolic-paraboloid roof, which serves not only as an interesting visual element but also enhances the interior space, allowing for a deeper interaction with the natural environment.

Architectural Concept

The concept behind the Quarter House focuses on creating a space for quiet reflection and mindfulness. The roof's unique shape rises toward the entry, then gently arches down, drawing the eye toward the natural features nearby. This design creates a calming presence, encouraging users to engage in introspection and stillness.

Interior Layout

Inside the cabin, simplicity is prioritized for effective use. Guests are greeted by woven grass mats that provide comfortable areas for seated and prone meditation. Upon entering, individuals remove their shoes and can store personal items on a nearby bench, making it easy to transition into meditation. Walls are lined with open shelving to hold meditation objects, ensuring they are readily available during reflective moments.

Natural Elements and Sustainability

A wood altar positioned to the east captures direct sunlight, enhancing the spiritual aspect of the space. The roof is designed to collect rainwater, showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility. This water serves multiple roles, including supporting the distilling process for floral essences, emphasizing a connection between the cabin and its natural surroundings.

Material Selection

Material choices are integral to the design. The exterior features kaikawaka cedar, selected for its ability to blend into the forested backdrop as it ages naturally. Inside, woven grass mats add warmth and comfort, contributing to the inviting atmosphere for meditation. These materials reinforce the goal of integrating the cabin with its environment, promoting a sense of grounding.

Sunlight streams through the roof's contours, creating shifting patterns in the interior that change with the day's light. This dynamic quality reinforces the interplay between the structure and nature, adding a layer of tranquility to the overall design.
