The design focuses on creating a residential space suitable for modern business professionals. Located in urban areas where efficiency is essential, the concept emphasizes modularity, allowing for flexibility and adaptability to meet various needs. The aim is to merge living and working environments in a way that enhances daily experiences.

Modular Design
A key feature is the modular approach that allows for installation within three days. This quick assembly process is both practical and efficient, ensuring that the finished space can be utilized promptly. Modular components lend themselves to various functions, making the design versatile for different lifestyles.

Structural Integrity
The construction includes horizontal wall sections that connect different parts of the building while offering protection against water leaks. This design choice enhances durability and strength, ensuring the structure can withstand weather elements. The materials selected yield a density between 1700-2250 kg/m³, along with noteworthy compressive and tensile strengths that contribute to a reliable foundation.

Functional Planning
Inside, the layout is designed for flexibility with spaces that serve multiple purposes. The residential office features a porch and a canopy over the veranda, creating a welcoming entry. The combined kitchen and dining area also functions as an office, maximizing usability. Living spaces include a bedroom with an attached shower, making efficient use of space to meet everyday needs.

Performance Specifications
The materials used in the construction provide impressive performance metrics. They show a Charpy impact strength between 1.1-2.5 kg/mm², signaling resilience against impacts. The compressive strength ranges from 490-840 kg/cm², further affirming the durability of the structure.

The overall design encompasses a total heated area of 21.2 m², reaching a cumulative area of 25 m². Each section is carefully planned, addressing various functions and ensuring that the design accommodates the requirements of modern users. The thoughtful arrangement contributes to practical living solutions that respond to the dynamic nature of contemporary life.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
