The Al Wathba Observation Tower, located in Abu Dhabi, offers a unique setting for bird watching through its thoughtful architectural design. It is organized into three separate levels, each aiming to enhance the visitor's interaction with the natural surroundings. The hexagonal shape of the building provides stability and adds a cultural reference to Islamic architecture, allowing the structure to blend into its environment while serving its functional purpose.

Design Levels

The ground floor acts as an entry point, giving visitors an initial view of the landscape. This level allows guests to become familiar with their surroundings and serves as a base for further exploration. The design welcomes visitors to appreciate the diverse ecological aspects of the area.

Moving up to the first floor, the tower elevates the experience by providing broader and clearer views of the landscape. From this vantage point, visitors can better observe birds and the nearby water bodies. The design carefully considers sight lines, allowing for unobstructed views, which enhances the overall experience of being in nature.

The sunken level offers a more intimate interaction with wildlife. This space is designed for close observation, encouraging visitors to engage directly with the birds. The arrangement encourages both passive and active participation, aligning with the tower's main goal of being a dedicated bird-watching location.

Accessibility and Educational Features

Accessibility is an important part of the design, as the structure includes a ramp for wheelchair access between the ground and first floors. This makes it easier for all visitors to navigate the space. Furthermore, information displays in the central core area provide details about local bird species and their habitats. This educational aspect contributes to a richer understanding of the ecosystem and fosters awareness among visitors.

Material choices also play a significant role in the design. Treated timber wood is used for the hexagonal members, flooring, and supports. This material not only adds strength but also fits well with the natural environment, helping the structure connect more closely with its setting.

The Al Wathba Observation Tower reflects a careful approach to its environment, combining practical design with engaging experiences. The hexagonal shape encourages visitors to appreciate their surroundings. It highlights the relationships within the ecosystem through observation points and educational elements, creating a space that fosters conservation and appreciation for nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
