The Eco Lodges project is located in the Qasar Al Sarab Protected Area of the UAE, a region known for its vast desert landscape and unique environmental features. It aims to create a peaceful retreat in this stunning environment, focusing on a design that respects the natural surroundings while providing comfortable accommodation. The concept revolves around modular lodges arranged in clusters, promoting community interaction while preserving the privacy of individual guests.

Community-Oriented Design

The arrangement of the lodges encourages social connections among visitors. They are grouped together to allow for group activities, yet each lodge provides a private space for guests. This design is inspired by nature, offering a protective shelter that allows occupants to watch wildlife and gaze at the clear night sky from terraces and skylights.

Sustainable Features

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design. The lodges are positioned to minimize direct sunlight exposure, incorporating large roof overhangs that provide shade to glass areas. This strategy helps reduce the need for cooling systems and improves energy efficiency. Additionally, modern windcatcher systems work together with air cooling methods to create comfortable indoor environments.

Water Management

The project addresses water scarcity through the use of renewable sources. Rainwater collection systems are incorporated, specifically designed for the dry regions of northern Ras Al Kaimah and Al Beeah. These systems include shared tanks for effective management of collected rainwater. To further promote sustainability, grey water is recycled using reed beds, which not only manage water responsibly but also enhance the landscape around the lodges.

Construction Approach

Construction of the lodges employs stress-skin timber hexagonal box modules made from Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) or plywood panels. This building method allows for quick assembly and design flexibility while aligning with sustainable practices. The roof structures can be partially pre-assembled, leading to a more efficient construction process that limits environmental disruption.

Each lodge features a private terrace designed to offer views of the expansive desert landscape. This focus on outdoor connection invites guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty that surrounds them, enhancing their overall experience in the tranquil desert setting.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
