The architectural design presents a long block structure that aligns with the natural landscape of Iceland, focusing on traditional Icelandic design elements. Featuring a green gable roof, the building draws inspiration from the region’s historical architecture, particularly styles used since the Viking era. This cinema, titled "Signpost," merges cultural identity with modern function, creating an inviting space for community engagement.

Site Integration

The rounded form of the building is intentionally oriented to face notable local features, such as the Grjótagjá caves and the mountain Hliðarfjall. This thoughtful positioning offers views while connecting the structure to its surroundings. The entrance is elevated and slopes towards the street, guiding visitors in a manner that emphasizes arrival and exploration.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout includes various functional spaces, such as main and service entries, emergency exits, and a temporary parking area. Accessibility has been a key consideration, ensuring that all visitors can navigate the cinema easily. The cinema hall contains hexagonal modules inspired by natural magma pillars, providing flexibility in seating arrangements. This design enhances comfort for diverse audiences.

Materiality and Aesthetic

The materials used reflect a commitment to sustainability and context. The building is capped with a green flat roof that allows it to integrate effectively with the landscape. A wooden facade, characterized by battens and ventilation gaps, aligns with natural aesthetics while promoting energy efficiency. Concrete blocks serve as the foundation walls, and reinforced concrete provides the necessary structural support.

Design Details

The seating features comfortable beds in place of traditional front-row options, improving the viewing experience. Screens on multiple walls create an immersive atmosphere, allowing audiences to connect deeply with the films being shown. This careful attention to detail fosters a unique interaction between visitors and the cinematic experience within a contextually rich environment.
