Constructed with hempcrete and a spruce framework, the cabin in Lithuania integrates sustainable water and energy solutions to serve as a reflective retreat in a forested environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with a natural hempcrete insulation for optimal environmental performance.
02
Utilizes a sloped roof designed for efficient rainwater collection.
03
Incorporates large glazing to enhance visual connection with the surrounding landscape.
04
Features a greywater system that supports local biodiversity with native plants.
05
Employs spruce wood for its durability and minimal ecological footprint.

The design features a self-contained cabin situated in a forested area of Lithuania. It serves as a peaceful place for contemplation and connection to nature. The cabin emphasizes sustainability and aims to minimize its impact on the environment. Its layout and design offer a blend of modern living conveniences while encouraging a close relationship with the natural world.

Design Concept

The cabin’s small footprint plays a critical role in reducing its ecological impact on the surrounding landscape. A sloped roof enhances its functionality by allowing for efficient collection of rainwater. This water is channeled into a tank and treated with reverse osmosis, making it safe for drinking. This method supports the idea of responsible resource management while providing essential water supply for occupants.

Energy Efficiency

Energy requirements are met through the integration of photovoltaic panels in the roof. These panels work with a Tesla Powerwall II accumulator to store solar energy for later use. This design ensures that the cabin operates independently, relying mostly on renewable sources. The choice to use solar energy highlights a commitment to sustainability while offering modern comfort.

Material Choices

Construction of the cabin uses spruce wood, known for its strength and sustainability. This choice aligns with the goal of creating a structure that functions well within its natural setting. Spruce wood not only offers durability but also promotes an environmentally friendly approach to building. Its properties contribute to a long-lasting structure that harmonizes with the landscape.

Interior and Exterior Integration

Large windows along the main elevation provide views of the Lithuanian countryside. These openings help blur the lines between the inside and outside, inviting nature closer to the living space. Ventilation is enhanced with adjustable blinds that allow occupants to control light and temperature effectively. This feature contributes to overall comfort inside the cabin, making it a suitable retreat.

The cabin also includes a greywater system that channels used water into an eco swamp filled with native plants. This system supports local ecosystems and demonstrates a commitment to environmental care. Its design reflects a thinking approach to living sustainably while enriching the natural habitat around it.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
