Balance in the Woods presents a contemporary approach that focuses on the busy lives many people lead today. Located in the Netherlands, the project aims to address burnout and stress among young adults by creating spaces for meditation and reflection. The overall design seeks to promote a sense of calm and balance in daily life. It achieves this through a series of silent meditation cabins that blend with their natural surroundings.

Design Concept

The cabins are designed with both introverted and extroverted elements. Introverted spaces feature smaller windows and inward orientations, fostering a sense of privacy and introspection. On the other hand, larger windows in the extroverted designs frame views of nature, allowing users to connect with their environment. This thoughtful combination creates spaces that accommodate different needs, whether for solitude or interaction with the outside world.

Daily Rituals

Daily rituals play a key role in the cabin experience. Activities such as bathing, fetching water, chopping wood, and cooking are incorporated into the design. These essential tasks are laid out in a way that encourages users to engage actively with their surroundings. This structure supports mindfulness, allowing individuals to become more aware of their environment and their own daily rhythm.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout of the cabins throughout the forest encourages users to interact with nature. Cabins are positioned near facilities like toilets and wood-chopping areas, which require movement and effort. This thoughtful arrangement enhances the user experience by reinforcing the connection between activity and relaxation. It creates a balance that is both physical and mental, blending daily work with moments of peace.

Materiality

Locally produced wood and natural hempcrete are selected for construction, keeping sustainability in mind. These materials help the cabins blend into the forest environment, making them not only functional but also respectful of nature. This approach reflects a commitment to environmental awareness, ensuring that the design is in harmony with its surroundings.

The interiors emphasize multifunctionality. Features such as beds can serve as workspaces, making the cabins adaptable to various needs. This flexibility accommodates different lifestyles, providing options for both productivity and relaxation. It invites users to find their balance in a space designed for both activity and contemplation.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
