The Eco-Wedge House is an innovative solution for off-grid living, focused on sustainability and efficiency. Located in Spain, it responds to the growing interest in environmentally friendly housing as individuals seek a deeper connection with nature. The design features a modular structure that allows for flexibility in both layout and function, accommodating a range of living needs.

Modular Design Efficiency

The design employs a modular approach with prefabricated components, which enhances construction efficiency and allows for various configurations. This method supports versatility, enabling the house to adapt to different sites and circumstances. Within the compact footprint, essential functions such as sleeping, working, and dining are organized thoughtfully to maximize space without compromising comfort.

Sustainable Resource Management

Central to the Eco-Wedge House are several systems that manage energy and water resources. A rainwater recovery system captures natural water, while solar panels provide heating for water and photovoltaic solar cells generate electricity. A solar wall collector aids in warming the air naturally, supplemented by a wood-burning stove for additional heating. This integrated approach fosters independence and promotes sustainability in daily living.

Material Specifications

In line with its focus on sustainability, the Eco-Wedge House uses a selection of eco-friendly materials. The structure consists of a prefabricated wooden frame, which is covered with plywood for support and durability. The exterior is finished with wooden panes that enhance insulation and add visual warmth. Inside, hemp batt insulation is used, topped with a waterproof membrane, ensuring energy efficiency and protection from moisture.

Functional Elements

The design includes practical features that contribute to its sustainability goals. A septic tank manages waste efficiently, while hot water and gray water reservoirs support water usage. There is also a rainwater reservoir for collecting and storing water. These elements emphasize a focus on effective resource management, allowing the house to operate with minimal environmental impact.

The Eco-Wedge House stands out as a well-considered design that balances practicality with ecological responsibility. Every detail serves a purpose, reflecting a commitment to sustainable living while maintaining comfort and functionality.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
