Heavy Materials and Wood Accents in a Community-Centered Residence

Project in-detail

Constructed with heavy materials and warm wood accents, the residence harmonizes with its lakeside setting to provide a flexible space for painters and their families.
5 key facts about this project
01
Lakeside location enhances natural light and views.
02
Dual-volume structure separates living and studio spaces.
03
Perpendicular axis promotes easy circulation and interaction.
04
Transitional multipurpose space encourages collaboration.
05
Heavy materials provide stability while warm wood accents create comfort.

The Cernsostes House, located near Cernsostes Lake in Latvia, serves as a residence for painters and their families. It combines traditional Lithuanian house design with modern elements to create an environment that encourages creativity and community. The overall structure features two main volumes, which support both living spaces and dedicated studio areas.

Design Concept
The house consists of two distinct volumes: one designed for everyday living and family gatherings, and the other dedicated to painting. This arrangement allows for a variety of living and working scenarios. By blending private and communal spaces, the design supports both solitude for individual artists and opportunities for collaboration among them.

Spatial Organization
The architecture emphasizes a connection to the natural surroundings, with expansive views of the lake. Spaces within the house are arranged to promote interaction with the outdoor environment. Open areas and closed spaces can be adjusted based on personal needs, allowing inhabitants to feel comfortable in their surroundings.

Materiality
A key aspect of the design is its choice of materials, which enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The lower levels are made from heavy, cold, and rigid materials that provide stability. In contrast, the upper sections use wood, which adds warmth and a more welcoming feel. This contrast also helps distinguish between communal and private areas, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Integration with Landscape
Of particular interest is the studio, which has a ridge that shifts toward the lake. This thoughtful design choice enhances the building’s appearance while providing beautiful views for both artists and visitors. The space between the house and studio encourages movement, allowing people to engage with their surroundings. This transition fosters an atmosphere that is conducive to artistic expression, where creativity can truly thrive.

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.
