The Ozols Retreat is situated in a quiet forest, designed to offer a restful experience for visitors wishing to connect with nature. The retreat blends with its surroundings, enhancing the natural landscape while encouraging moments of reflection and tranquility. The design concept focuses on the elements of nature, aiming to create a strong bond between the architecture and its environment.

Natural Connection

Guests begin their experience with a forest walk that invites them to explore the beauty of the area. The design highlights features like splintered heartwood and the rough texture of tree bark, showcasing the varying qualities of nature. A split tree within the space serves as a guide for visitors while also providing protective shelter, demonstrating how natural elements can serve multiple purposes in the ecosystem.

Materials and Structure

The building's exterior consists of rough wood, while the heartwood inside remains preserved. This choice reflects both durability and warmth, allowing the structure to resonate with its forest setting. Inside, workshops and meditation areas are designed for comfort, providing spaces that encourage visitors to engage with their surroundings while feeling safe and at ease.

Community and Privacy

The retreat effectively balances social spaces and private areas. Four guest rooms are arranged to offer peaceful forest views, allowing for a sense of seclusion while retaining their connection to shared spaces. The communal kitchen and dining area overlook the lake, inviting interaction among guests. This layout supports a mix of solitude and socializing, catering to different preferences for shared experiences.

Final Design Detail

The journey culminates at the edge of the lake, where visitors can take in the untouched natural beauty around them. This location serves as a point of calm, inviting moments of silence and thoughtfulness. A meditation room, tucked away from the social areas, provides a quiet space for introspection, enhancing the overall atmosphere of serenity that the retreat aims to foster.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
