The design at Hverfjall is located at the foot of a prominent volcano in Iceland, providing a space that invites people into close contact with nature. The concept revolves around the simple act of drinking coffee, positioning it within a dramatic setting characterized by rock, snow, earth, and sky. The building aims to blur the lines between inside and outside, creating an environment that encourages visitors to engage meaningfully with the landscape.

Spatial Integration

Inside, the structure breaks away from conventional enclosures, allowing it to interact naturally with the rugged environment. This design choice creates a strong sense of connection to the surroundings, inviting visitors to experience the site’s unique features. The spaces are arranged in a way that leads individuals through both the architecture and the natural landscape, encouraging exploration and discovery.

Community and Interaction

Key elements such as the hearth table and coffee window play important roles in fostering community. The hearth table serves as a central meeting point, providing warmth and comfort for visitors while they connect with each other and the expansive landscape around them. The coffee window enhances this interaction by offering views of the natural world, creating a shared experience that merges the interior with the outside.

Architectural Form

The building’s form is intentionally designed to be low-slung, reducing its impact against the vast landscape of stone and earth. This deliberate scale not only showcases the beauty of Hverfjall but also reflects old traditions of building in harmony with nature. The architecture captures a sense of respect for the environment, encouraging a thoughtful relationship between people and the land.

Natural Context

While specific materials are not mentioned, the architecture implies a strong intention to harmonize with its natural context. The design suggests a preference for materials that blend with the surroundings, reinforcing the idea that the building is an extension of the landscape. This focus on natural integration supports sustainability and shows a commitment to the environment.

From the coffee window, the views of the striking landscape frame a contemplative experience, making the act of gathering feel connected to the powerful presence of Hverfjall.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
