Grounded Stone Walls and Floating Wooden Shala for Yoga Retreat

Project in-detail

Elevated above the ground and framed by movable louvre panels, the Yoga Shala connects seamlessly with nature while the solid stone walls of the Entrance Hall ground the experience, creating a tranquil retreat for yoga practitioners.
5 key facts about this project
01
Located in a tranquil valley, the project emphasizes a strong connection between the built environment and the surrounding nature.
02
The Entrance Hall features two parallel stone walls that create a focused view toward lateral gardens.
03
Adjustable louvre panels on the Yoga Shala enable customizable light and airflow for enhanced comfort.
04

05
The elevated design of the Yoga Shala allows for expansive views of the surrounding mountains and landscape.

The Vale de Moses Yoga House "Terra e Céu" is located in the serene landscape of central Portugal, surrounded by lush mountains and flowing rivers. It serves as a retreat for yoga practitioners, emphasizing a deep connection between built forms and the natural environment. The design concept draws from the ideas of 'Terra' and 'Céu,' representing earthiness and the pursuit of spiritual elevation.

Spatial Organization

The building is organized into two key areas: the Entrance Hall and the Yoga Shala. The Entrance Hall functions as a welcoming space, allowing visitors to transition smoothly from the outside world into the practice area. It features two parallel stone walls that reflect local architectural styles, framing views of the gardens and creating a cozy entry point. This setup prepares guests for the experience that awaits them.

Above the Entrance Hall sits the Yoga Shala, designed with an open plan that invites natural light and air. This elevated space feels connected to the trees and mountains that surround it. Large windows provide unobstructed views of the landscape, enhancing the sense of calm during yoga practices. The layout prioritizes comfort and adaptability to varying weather conditions.

Sustainability Features

A significant aspect of the design is the bio-filter system integrated into the Entrance Hall. Rainwater and gray water from kitchen and restroom facilities are treated through a series of pools that use natural filtration techniques. The system includes layers of activated charcoal and gravel, which help clean the water. This thoughtful approach conserves water and lowers the ecological impact of the structure, highlighting a commitment to sustainable living.

Façade Design

The façade of the Yoga Shala includes adjustable louver panels that allow for control over light and air. This feature promotes natural ventilation while giving users the flexibility to adjust their environment. The combination of stone and wood in the construction connects the building to its surroundings, offering a simple and cohesive appearance that respects local traditions.

The overall design focuses on creating a tranquil atmosphere, where light and shadow play across the spaces. These elements encourage a sense of calm, making the Yoga Shala an inviting place for practice and reflection.
