01
The watchtower's grooved facade mimics the natural scars of the landscape.
02
Large windows are strategically placed to maximize views of the surrounding terrain.
03
A wooden walkway guides visitors from the parking area to the center's entrance.

The site within the Icelandic landscape is shaped by the region’s geological features, particularly the movement of tectonic plates. The design draws on these natural elements, reflecting the displacement of soil and the resulting marks on the ground. The visitor center serves as both a gateway to the nearby caves and a space that connects visitors to the surrounding environment. The architecture emphasizes a relationship between its forms, their functions, and the landscape, creating a unique experience for users.

Watchtower Design

At the core of the composition is a watchtower, designed to stand apart from the visitor center. This difference in form highlights its role within the landscape while connecting back to the geological influences that define the area. The façade features grooves created by skilled woodworkers, which help to capture light and shadow. This attention to detail not only enhances the structure's visual appeal but also invites visitors to engage with the environment around them.

Spatial Configuration

The design utilizes simple geometric shapes that rotate and intersect, resulting in a lively arrangement of volumes. The slender pinnacle of the watchtower helps it stand out against the vast Icelandic backdrop, making it recognizable from a distance. Visitors approach via a road leading to a parking area, and a wooden walkway guides them toward the entrance of the visitor center, establishing a clear connection between the journey and the destination.

Interior Experience

Inside the visitor center, the shape of the roof resembles the cave formations that visitors can explore. This intentional design creates a sense of continuity between architecture and nature. The interior includes various spaces such as an observation platform, waiting areas, and a café. Careful planning of these areas ensures easy movement throughout the center. Large windows in the café and waiting areas allow for an abundance of natural light, creating a warm atmosphere and offering views of the landscape.

Final Design Detail

The thoughtful arrangement of spaces encourages interaction between the interior and exterior, reflecting the aim of integrating the built environment with its surroundings. Ultimately, the watchtower serves as more than just a viewing point; it represents a connection between architecture, nature, and human experience, emphasizing the relationship between design and the rugged Icelandic landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
