The RIGA FOREST COLUMBARIUM occupies a thoughtful position in the forest cemetery of Riga, Latvia. It is designed to be visible from the main pathways that connect it to important nearby sites, such as Bralu kapi and the soldier's graveyard. The structure serves as a memorial space that invites families and visitors to reflect and remember. By balancing solitude with celebration, the design honors those who have passed while creating an environment that inspires contemplation.

Architectural Concept

The concept focuses on fostering a reflective environment. A central domed hall serves as the primary gathering space, inviting individuals into a grand yet personal area. This hall is complemented by longitudinal halls that gently lead into bays for the urn niches. The proportions of the building are based on the dimensions of the human body, which helps to create an intimate experience for visitors and encourages a sense of personal connection to the space.

Structural Composition

This design showcases a rhythmic arrangement of structural elements, featuring primary arches and groin vaulting that define the interior volumes. The approach of frame and filling ensures a sturdy presence capable of accommodating the memorial features. The use of substantial ashlar masonry builds a strong exterior, reflecting the purpose of the building as a burial site while allowing it to blend into the surrounding forest.

Material Selection

Materials are chosen to reflect the natural environment and ensure durability. The base is constructed with basalt, while the upper sections utilize Travertine. Inside, the groined vaults are finished in white plaster, which enhances the sense of brightness and space. Functional elements like bronze railings and wrought iron windows painted black align with the overall design. The flooring features mixed terrazzo patterns, adding a tactile quality that encourages movement and contributes to the cohesive narrative of the design.

Architectural Detail

Classical details adorn the building, including ornamental architraves with egg-and-dart motifs alongside chiseled designs that enhance the visual experience. These elements add a respectful yet celebratory tone to the atmosphere, deepening the emotional connection for visitors. Each design feature serves to honor those remembered, ensuring the Columbarium stands as a dignified space for reflection and remembrance.
