The project is situated in the unique landscape of Mývatn, characterized by its black sand and the imposing volcano Hverfjall. It focuses on connecting nature and built forms, emphasizing sustainability and ecological considerations. At the center of the design is a greenhouse that allows visitors to experience the surrounding topography in an engaging way. The concept revolves around the relationships between different volumes, creating a dialogue between the natural and cultural aspects of the environment.

Design Concept and User Experience

The greenhouse acts as a central structure, establishing not just a sense of scale but also inviting life into the landscape. Visitors enter through a grating path that leads to a reception hall filled with natural light from a linear skylight. This entry experience provides a smooth transition into the internal spaces, enabling a connection with the external environment.

Nature and Culture Interaction

A significant component of the design is the clear separation of nature and culture, represented as two distinct but related volumes. This arrangement encourages visitors to consider how these elements coexist. Along the pathway to the restaurant, various fruits and vegetables grow, enhancing the idea of cultivation and the origins of food served here. This connection strengthens the overall experience for visitors.

Culinary Integration

The kitchen plays a key role, where chefs prepare meals using locally sourced ingredients. This emphasis on local agriculture highlights principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility. The relationship between the kitchen and its surroundings reinforces the idea of nourishment from the earth.

Spatial Organization and Flow

The layout encourages exploration of the terrain, with a catwalk offering visitors panoramic views. This design choice allows for a deeper appreciation of the surrounding landscape. The organized pathway fosters a rhythm in the experience, offering moments of reflection as visitors engage with both nature and the architectural elements.

The greenhouse, with its horizontal form and vibrant plant life, contrasts the surrounding greys, adding life to the stark landscape. It exemplifies a commitment to integrating nature within architectural design.
