Green Roofs and Reclaimed Wood Framing Visitor Experience in Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

With a green roof that merges with the volcanic landscape and the use of reclaimed wood framing, the design enhances the visitor experience while providing essential amenities in the Hverfjall region of Iceland.
5 key facts about this project
01
A green roof integrates with the natural landscape, enhancing environmental sustainability.
02
The use of reclaimed wood reflects local building traditions and promotes resource efficiency.
03
Hyperbolic design elements guide visitor movement towards significant views of Hverfjall.
04
Three ramps ensure complete accessibility across varied terrain for all visitors.
05
Black aluminum framing provides durability while minimizing maintenance needs in harsh conditions.

The Hverfjall Welcome is a visitor center located in the dramatic volcanic landscape of Hverfjall. It provides essential services and amenities while enhancing the experience for those exploring the area. The design is based on respecting and connecting with nature, allowing visitors to appreciate the unique surroundings while offering educational and recreational opportunities.

Design Concept and Visitor Engagement

The design centers on engaging visitors from the moment they arrive. It encourages a connection to the environment by highlighting key views of Hverfjall and its striking geological features. The building provides educational information, preparing visitors for their journey and immersing them in the region’s natural beauty.

Functionality and Layout

The layout is thoughtfully organized with designated areas for both private moments of reflection and public interaction. A central café acts as a gathering space for guests, while other areas serve various visitor needs. The design directs movement toward paths leading to the rim of the crater, reinforcing the link between the building and the surrounding landscape, while actively encouraging exploration.

Materiality and Sustainability

Sustainability is a key consideration in the selection of materials used in the design. The project incorporates elements that are common in local architecture, chosen specifically for their ability to withstand the Icelandic climate. Notable materials include black aluminum mullions, green roofs, tempered glass windows, reclaimed weathered wood, corrugated galvanized steel, epoxy terrazzo flooring, and black corrugated galvanized steel roofing. These choices not only enhance durability but also suit the environmental context, making the building practical and long-lasting.

Architectural Features

The design employs an asymptotic system using hyperbolas. This approach helps define movement and elegantly frames the captivating views outside. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the landscape as they navigate through the space. Accessibility is also a priority, with ramps integrated into the design for smooth transitions across the sloped site, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the facility.

Incorporating elements of both tradition and contemporary design, the Hverfjall Welcome includes a green roof that blends with the surrounding environment. This feature not only showcases a commitment to sustainability but also fosters a close relationship between the architecture and the breathtaking site, allowing visitors to experience the unique landscape fully.
