### Overview
Located in the Allapattah neighborhood of Miami, Florida, the project aims to revitalize an area primarily inhabited by Hispanic communities from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This initiative focuses on enhancing educational opportunities, community engagement, and providing affordable housing solutions for the approximately 35,000 residents. The design integrates various functions—including residential units, educational facilities, and cultural centers—within a cohesive framework aimed at fostering social interaction and improving the overall quality of life.

### Spatial Configuration and User Engagement
The layout emphasizes community-oriented development through the creation of shared spaces designed to encourage collaboration among residents. Distinct areas for residential housing incorporate modern aesthetics with outdoor balconies and terraces, promoting a connection to nature. Educational facilities feature flexible classroom configurations that support diverse learning styles, integrating technology to adapt to varying educational methodologies.

Public spaces, including a network of pathways and green areas, facilitate exploration and interaction, with seating spaces, playgrounds, and communal gathering areas designed to promote social cohesion. A dedicated cultural center serves multiple purposes, functioning as a venue for local businesses, an auditorium for events, and a social hub that nurtures artistic expression and community identity.

### Material Choice and Sustainability
The selection of materials reflects a commitment to durability and ecological sustainability. Concrete serves as the primary structural element, providing strength and versatility. Glass facades enhance natural light and connect indoor environments to the outdoors, while natural wood elements contribute warmth to the interior spaces. Green roof systems are strategically employed to improve insulation and manage stormwater, reinforcing the project's sustainable design ethos. This thoughtful materiality not only enhances the functionality of the development but also its visual character.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
