The Tiwai meditation space is a carefully designed structure set against the quiet backdrop of New Zealand's landscapes. It serves as a place for reflection and mindfulness, drawing inspiration from the concept of a tree trunk. This idea symbolizes a connection between the earth and the sky, representing stability and nourishment. The design aims to engage individuals with nature, creating an environment that supports meditation.

Conceptual Framework

The building features a circular floor plan, measuring six meters in diameter, divided into six equal segments. This layout accommodates five individuals while incorporating an entry space that showcases a semi-circular carved stone flower processing altar. Each segment is further divided, resulting in eighteen distinct areas that provide unobstructed views through central windows. This arrangement connects the interior with the surrounding landscape.

Spatial Arrangement and Light

A hallmark of the design is the wrap-around glazing that allows light to enter freely, enhancing the interior atmosphere. Organic curtains, neatly tucked into a negative ceiling detail, add visual softness and provide shading when needed. This thoughtful aspect ensures that the presence of nature is felt throughout the space, regardless of the weather, offering a consistent retreat for meditation.

Environmental Integration

The green roof adds another layer to the Tiwai design, as it features foliage that softly spills over the structure. This element creates a gentle transition of light and shadow within the space, offering an evolving experience throughout the day. The green roof contributes to effective insulation and reduces noise from rain, helping to create a calm and tranquil environment for those inside.

Material Selection

Materials play a significant role in the design, with Hinuera Ahi Natural sandstone used for the flower processing altar and corten steel for the bioethanol fire pit at the center. These choices enhance the aesthetic appeal while aligning with sustainable practices and local sourcing.

The combination of natural light, thoughtful shading, and carefully chosen materials creates a meditation space that encourages deep reflection. It invites individuals to enjoy their surroundings while grounding them in the peaceful context of New Zealand.
