The EuroVELO 6 cycle route rest stops provide much-needed facilities for cyclists traveling across Europe. Strategically situated along the route, these stops are designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. The design concept draws inspiration from the shape of a small hill, allowing the structure to merge with its environment. This thoughtful integration enhances the experience for cyclists as they journey through diverse terrains.

Design Concept

The roof of the pavilion is a prominent feature, designed as a green roof that serves important functions. It provides insulation, helping to keep the interior comfortable in varying weather conditions. Additionally, the green roof supports local plant life, promoting biodiversity and contributing positively to the ecosystem. By ensuring the building is both functional and environmentally friendly, the design reflects a commitment to sustainability.

Sustainable Features

Incorporating solar panels into the roof allows the building to generate energy from sunlight. This use of renewable energy reduces reliance on traditional power sources and aligns with modern practices in environmental responsibility. Each aspect of the design prioritizes sustainability, demonstrating a consciousness of the impact on both users and the environment.

Functional Layout

The layout of the building is planned with user needs in mind. The front façade consists of sleeping capsules equipped with curtains for privacy. Outdoor areas include communal spaces with fireplaces, encouraging social interaction among cyclists. The back façade offers essential amenities like storage for kitchen supplies, USB charging ports, and sanitation facilities, including showers and toilets. This range of features makes the rest stop practical for cyclists who may need to rest and recharge.

User Experience

Seating areas are thoughtfully placed throughout the pavilion to foster relaxation and encourage conversation. These spaces create opportunities for cyclists to gather, share experiences, and enjoy their surroundings. The design appeals to users with its natural materials and forms, inviting them to connect with the environment as they take a break from their journey. The result is a supportive space that caters to the practical needs of cyclists while enhancing their overall travel experience.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
